Public life

A short, documented chapter in politics.

Mahesh Savani’s time in electoral politics lasted about seven months. It is set out here factually, as reported by the news media, without comment.

Before 2021

Mahesh Savani was long seen as close to the Bharatiya Janata Party. According to DeshGujarat and other outlets, in 2019 he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah and sought a BJP Lok Sabha ticket from Surat, which he did not receive.

Joining the Aam Aadmi Party, June 2021

On 27 June 2021, in Surat, he joined the Aam Aadmi Party and was inducted by Manish Sisodia, then Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi. He said he was joining with krantikari (revolutionary) thoughts. He also said he had not been allowed to open a COVID care centre.

The December 2021 fast

In December 2021, after allegations of a paper leak in the state head-clerk recruitment examination held on 12 December, he joined an indefinite fast at the party’s Gandhinagar office. He was later admitted to hospital in Ahmedabad.

Stepping away, January 2022

On 17 January 2022 he announced he was leaving the party. He said political commitments had left him unable to focus on his business, his social work, his family and his health. His adopted daughters, he said, had told him he was not a man of politics. “I am not ambitious about having any post or becoming a minister,” he told The Week.

On later affiliations

Mahesh Savani has attended public events with leaders of several parties since 2022, and Gujarat’s Chief Minister and Union ministers have attended his wedding ceremonies. We found no reliable news report of him formally joining another political party after January 2022, so this site does not claim one.
