Community Impact

When a wedding becomes a gathering of the whole city.

Each December ceremony brings together tens of thousands of guests, leaders of every faith and families from dozens of communities. Over the years Mahesh Savani has used that gathering to ask for more than blessings.

Case study · December 2022

1,38,283 promises to give life.

At the two-day Dikri Jagat Janani ceremony in December 2022, where 300 daughters married, guests were invited to pledge their organs. The India Book of Records recorded 1,38,283 pledges, the most at a single event.

The appeal did not end that year. Organ-donation pledges were taken again at the December 2023 ceremony. In December 2024 the group distributed 50,000 tulsi saplings carrying organ-donation messages, linking the campaign to the national Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam tree-planting drive.

India has a long-standing shortage of organ donors. Here the appeal reaches a very large audience, at a moment when families are gathered to celebrate.

Areas of impact

Beyond the brides.

The weddings are the centre of Mahesh Savani’s public work, but their effects reach mothers, faith communities, patients and frontline workers.

Interfaith harmony

Hindu, Muslim, Christian and Sikh couples marry at the same ceremony, each by their own rites. In 2025 the group, with Dr Faruk Patel’s KP Group, sent Muslim daughters and their husbands on Umrah and about 300 mothers on a Char Dham-style pilgrimage.

2016 onwards

Mothers who raised daughters alone

The initiative exists largely for widowed mothers. A 2022 report said monthly support for widowed women had been raised to ₹7,500. In 2024 mothers of the brides were sent on a pilgrimage to Ayodhya, Varanasi, Prayagraj and Chhapaiya.

Widows’ support

Honouring frontline workers

At the December 2021 ceremony, doctors, lawyers, chartered accountants and journalists who had served through the COVID-19 pandemic were invited to perform the kanyadaan as a public gesture of thanks.

2021

Inclusion at the mandap

The 2024 ceremony included two hearing-impaired brides and two differently-abled brides among 111 daughters drawn from 39 communities.

2024

Healthcare

The PP Savani Group runs the P.P. Savani Heart Institute & Multispeciality Hospital on Varachha Road in Surat, adding medical care to the group’s schools, university and housing.

Group institution

A city-wide celebration

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Union ministers, and spiritual leaders including Morari Bapu have attended the ceremonies. Together with tens of thousands of guests, their presence has made the weddings one of Surat’s most visible community events.

Record, not rhetoric

What we include, and what we don’t.

A lot is written about well-known philanthropists, and not all of it holds up. This page lists only community work that appears in published news reports or in the PP Savani Group’s own announcements, and labels the group’s figures as such.

We found no reliable reporting of oxygen supply, hospitals or isolation centres run personally by Mahesh Savani during the COVID-19 pandemic, so we do not claim any. When he entered politics in June 2021, he said he had wanted to open a COVID care centre but had not been allowed to. P P Savani University separately reports arranging transport for more than 900 stranded people during the pandemic.

In his words

“Like every year… we have taken full responsibility for the girls who don’t have their fathers around anymore.”
